HONG KONG’S GOLD HUB AMBITIONS PUSH IMPORTS TO HIGHEST LEVEL IN MORE THAN A DECADE

Hong Kong’s ambition to become one of the world’s leading precious metals trading centres is beginning to show tangible results, with the city’s gold imports climbing to their highest monthly level in more than 11 years.

According to data released by Hong Kong’s Census and Statistics Department, gross gold imports reached 150.48 tonnes in June, representing a 29% increase from the previous month. The total marks the first time imports have surpassed 150 tonnes since late 2014 and reflects growing activity in the city’s physical gold market.

The figures include non-monetary gold shipments covering physical bullion, raw gold and semi-processed products, highlighting increased demand across the broader precious metals supply chain rather than just investment products.

Market analysts say the increase has been driven by renewed investor interest after gold’s recent price correction, which encouraged buyers to re-enter the market. A stronger Chinese yuan has also made gold relatively more attractive for regional investors, while financial institutions are believed to be increasing inventories ahead of expected demand.

The rise in imports coincides with Hong Kong’s efforts to strengthen its position as an international bullion trading hub. Earlier this month, the city announced the launch of a new gold clearing and settlement system designed to improve trading efficiency and support greater participation from both domestic and international financial institutions.

The initial clearing network includes 11 major banks—comprising five Chinese banks and six international institutions. Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing is also promoting gold futures trading through new incentive measures aimed at boosting liquidity and attracting more market participants.

The government’s long-term vision extends well beyond trading. Authorities plan to expand Hong Kong’s gold storage capacity to more than 2,000 tonnes over the next three years while strengthening cooperation with the Shanghai Gold Exchange on offshore warehousing and benchmark pricing. The objective is to develop a comprehensive ecosystem that combines trading, clearing, settlement and physical storage, positioning Hong Kong as a key gateway for gold flows across Asia.

Industry observers believe improved infrastructure could attract more international bullion dealers, institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals, creating deeper liquidity in the local market and reinforcing Hong Kong’s importance within the global precious metals industry.

The strong import data also comes as retail demand in Hong Kong continues to outperform broader global trends. While the World Gold Council reported that global jewellery demand fell 17% year-on-year to 278 tonnes during the second quarter as elevated prices discouraged buyers, Hong Kong bucked the trend, with local gold jewellery demand rising 15% year-on-year to 4.3 tonnes.

Elsewhere in the region, mainland China remained the world’s largest market for gold bars and coins, although second-quarter sales declined 7% year-on-year to 107 tonnes after exceptionally strong demand in the first quarter.

Looking ahead, analysts expect Hong Kong’s gold imports to remain well supported, although they caution that demand will continue to be influenced by broader macroeconomic conditions. US interest rate policy, Treasury yields and movements in the US dollar remain key drivers for global gold prices, while geopolitical uncertainty and ongoing central bank gold purchases continue to underpin longer-term demand.

With new trading infrastructure, expanded storage capacity and enhanced clearing and settlement systems now being rolled out, Hong Kong appears to be laying the foundations for a significantly larger role in the international gold market in the years ahead.
