Hong Kong flexes its muscles to outshine Singapore in the gold storage race
In a bold move to assert its dominance in the global gold market, Hong Kong is dramatically expanding its gold vault capacity at the airport from 150 tonnes to an ambitious 1,000 tonnes. This move isn’t just about storage—it’s a strategic push to position the city as a premier destination for gold trading in the Asia-Pacific region.
The expansion, which will see an initial jump to 200 tonnes, and then grow to the 1,000-tonne mark, is part of Hong Kong’s broader plan to cement itself as a key player in the precious metals sector. For over a decade, the airport’s depository has facilitated storage and trading for central banks, bullion exchanges, and institutional investors. Now, the city is gearing up for even bigger plays.
While Singapore has made strides in recent years—especially with the August 2024 opening of the Silver Bullion six-storey vault, housing 180,000 sq ft of metals—Hong Kong seems determined to outpace its regional rival. Singapore’s vault capacity stands at 500 tonnes of gold and 10,000 tonnes of silver, but Hong Kong’s aggressive expansion could soon leave those figures in the dust.
Financial Secretary Paul Chan, whose role as Hong Kong’s chief financial strategist places him at the helm of these developments, was confident in the city’s path forward.
Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of Hong Kong, stated:
I expect it would fuel new growth momentum, accelerate Hong Kong’s economic upgrading and ultimately make new and greater contributions to the wider nation’s development.
It’s clear that this move isn’t just about Hong Kong, but about the entire Asia region capitalising on gold’s global importance. As Asia gets on the gold bandwagon, soaking up tonnes of the precious metal, this vault expansion marks a shift in global bullion flows. The competition is fierce, but Hong Kong’s ambitious move suggests it’s aiming to win.
Singapore might have made its mark with silver, but Hong Kong’s vaults are set to carry the weight of the gold market in the region—and perhaps globally—going forward.
